A story about the weirdness of college admissions (with a happy ending!)

Just when I thought I had a grip on how unpredictable the college admissions process has become, I was told the following story by an acquaintance whose son is a senior in a very top suburban district outside of New York City. It sounded a bit improbable, but his mother assured me that this is actually what happened. The basics:   GPA: about a B+ ACT: 34 Intended major: Business Her son sent in an early application to the Finance program at Fordham (selective major), but he was told that his application wasnt strong enough, and he was advised to switch his application to the general pool. He did so and also submitted applications to a number of other schools, including Binghamton, Penn State, BU, and Indiana-Kelley (Business). Results: Binghamton: Accepted. Student turned it down because he didn’t want to live in not-very-happening central New York State for four years. IU-Kelley: Accepted. Student turned it down because he didn’t want to have to fly to school. (â€Å"So why did he apply†? I asked. His mother rolled her eyes. â€Å"Teenagers. Who knows.†) Penn State: Rejected from main campus; offered admission at Abington. Fordham: Wait-listed. (Ive literally never heard of a student being wait-listed at a school to which they applied—or attempted to apply—early. I actually asked his mother several times whether she was absolutely sure he had been wait-listed and not just deferred.) BU: Rejected Since Bing and IU were out, he decided that he should go to Penn State-Abington for a year and then transfer to the main campus. His mother was seriously under-impressed by the Abington campus, but before she even really had a chance to try to talk him out of it†¦ He got off the wait-list at Fordham. For Finance. With a $40,000 merit scholarship. On May 2nd. Takeaways: 1) Grades count more than test scores. I recognize that pretty much anyone involved in college admissions will say that, but it bears repeating. At the more selective schools, a 34 ACT was not enough to compensate for a so-so GPA, even from an extremely challenging high school. 2) There are no guarantees at selective schools with 70,000 (or even 45,000) applicants. Particularly if the school in question is public, half the East Coast applies, and a student is out of state. 3) People do actually get off waitlists. I’m not trying to give anyone false hope here, but sometimes life is strange. 4) Colleges are increasingly unable to predict enrollment: the fact that the student was offered such a significant merit scholarship for a program from which he had originally been dissuaded from applying, the day AFTER enrollment decisions were due, indicates that Fordham seriously overestimated its yield rate (which was not terribly high to begin with). Given that Fordham is a reputable, popular school with many decades of experience managing freshman enrollment, this suggests that the admissions landscape suddenly became much more unstable this year and that some administrators somewhere were starting to panic. I suspect that finances may be playing a major role here: my acquaintance mentioned that almost none of her son’s friends were planning to attend private schools; their parents just don’t want to shell out that kind of money. And this is in a town with an average income in the  mid-six figures.  If families in that income bracket are now being deterred from private schools by the cost, then this kind of craziness is probably just a harbinger of things to come.

Chemical composition of the interior and atmosphere shows us what the planets are made up of on the inside and what their atmospheres consist of. The planets are split into two main groups: the Jovian and the Terrestrial planets. The Terrestrial planets consist of the four smaller and more dense planets closer to the sun. The lobbyists for these huge casino companies state that it will also revive a dying economy if they allow casino gambling in their cities. Contrary to this claim though, Atlantic City has the highest unemployment rate in New Jersey. They claim restaurants, movie theaters, and other local businesses will benefit when exactly the opposite is true. Who is going to eat a loca l restaurant when the casino is offering free meals and drinks to gamblers. By 1996, Atlantic City casinos were devoting 318 million dollars to promotional food and drinks. Also in Atlantic City, over 900 of the 2100 small businesses there closed and the number of local restaurants was reduced from 243 to 146. When casinos come into a small community such as Atlantic City or Biloxi the people living in that community start to go there for entertainment instead of movie theaters, restaurants and other places they used to go to before. His style is simple, direct and his grammar is almost grade school-like. When first reading the short story one might find the short story in lack of substance due to the missing direct statements and descriptions of emotions. At first he does not want to talk about his experiences in the war, but when he feels the need to do it, people do not listen. Due to his desire to talk about it he starts lying to make his stories more interesting. I believe talking is an important part of the â€Å"healing process† when someone has experienced war – Krebs does not like talking to people due to the fact that they do not understand him. He would like to have a girlfriend, but the talking makes him change his mind, â€Å"now he would have liked a girl if she had some to him and not wanted to talk,† (l. 40). His mother pressurizes Krebs to find a girlfriend and she calls attention to the fact that the boys from his old school has settled down and â€Å"on their way to being really a credit to the community† (ll. 85-86). To Krebs this is a â€Å"hard slap in the face† – a veiled critic. The mother is very religious and she does not believe that going to war is the solution to anything – she does instead believe that a good job, a nice wife and children are the real â€Å"credit to the community†. Furthermore, the mother does not understand that Krebs is no longer like the boys he used to hang out with – he has seen death and death changes people. Death has made him incapable of loving something we are shown when the mother asks him â€Å"don’t you love your mother, dear boy? † (l. 97) and Krebs truthfully answers â€Å"no†. It was not his intention to hurt his mother, and he ends up promising her that he in fact loves her. This is yet another lie, and he realises that he has to move on. Krebs was once religious (â€Å"†¦ from a Methodist college in Kansas,† (l. 1)) but he has now lost his faith to God and he is no longer â€Å"in His Kingdom† (l. 4). His faith in religion has faltered due to his experiences in the war. Although he wants to break with the family’s religious values, but he cannot break with the authority he still feels religion is. Krebs feels sorry for his mother because she (and her religion) has made him lie – and made him feel guilty as well (â€Å"He had felt sorry for his mother she had made him lie. He would go to Kansas City and get a job and she would feel all right about it†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (ll. 23-24)). I believe that isolation from society is an important theme in this short story due to the fact that it has such an impact on the main character. During the war Krebs felt important and useful but now no one even wants to listen to his story unless he lies. He has turned into a passive observer – he observes the girls walking by, but he does not want to interact with them – he just sits on the porch reading. Hemingway wanted the reader to believe that his short stories’ and novels’ reflected himself as person. In Soldier’s Home it is obvious that Krebs does not like his mother – Hemingway did as well detest his mother. Hemingway was raised in a very religious way but as he grew older he became more rebellious and wanted to break with his former religious believes, just like Krebs.

It is important in identifying risks and putting in place appropriate measures to ensure that the project delivers as per the goal (Hillson, & Simon, 2007). Means of implementing measures are also made so that a project is run with a detailed understanding of what it demands at every face. Ensuring that perceived risks do not occur is a role of management hence ensures that they control the process through evaluation of completed stages and comparing them with set objectives and chances of risking the project. The assessment is needed to understand cause of the problem and if it can be corrected with appropriate measures (Belbin, 1981). Risk Management Process Cycle within a Company Several steps are undertaken before venturing into selection and implementation of projects. First, hazards are identified by determining perceived source of problem. This could be from inside or outside the or ganizations. It can be done through use of available objectives, scenario-based where events that can cause risks are examined. Second stage is assessing the hazards (Kendrick, 2009). This is through both qualitative and quantitative methods. The purpose of this stage is to determine the probability of the risk happening, estimate severity. Risk level is determined for each hazard identified. Focus is on how the risk can be eliminated. Third stage is deciding on preventive action. These are measures that will be used to eliminate or control the risks (Loosemore & Raftery, 2006). Tacking action is the fourth stage where preventive measures are put into place by prioritizing of what is essential. It also involves assigning individuals tasks when and how to do them to avoid the risks. The final stage is monitoring and reviewing the assessment time to time is necessary so as to understand what was left out and if every specification is being followed (Belbin, 1981).
